If your stereotype of Texas includes 10 gallon hats and the Ewings of "Dallas" fame, Fredericksburg might help you do some re-thinking. Texas is many different places, with no better example than historic Fredericksburg. Settled by Germans, the town has done a first class job of preserving its elegant past. Now it's a tourist stop and a popular place for retirement.

USAA, the insurance and financial giant, and Military.com have combined to produce a very thoughtful list of the best places to live for retired military personnel. Their picks consider the unique considerations military retirees should think about, such as pension taxation and proximity to  base exchanges and veterans and military hospitals.  The list contains some very unusual choices (e.g; Harrisburg, PA and Syracuse, NY), which is another reason we like it.

      Raleigh, NC
The Research Triangle region of North Carolina is known for its cutting-edge employers.  Another growth industry it has is retirement.  But one deserving town in the region that doesn't get much press is Raleigh, the state capitol. This medium-sized city is definitely worth considering. It is very lively, has plenty of cultural institutions, and a nice choice of active adult and 55+ communities.
